Entrepreneurs go from roads to rails....
By Deana Upson
Bruno Platzer, .......... and his wife Trudy will broaden their horizons.....with the inception of a newly formed nonprofit organization, Las Vegas Railroad Society.
"We decided to give back to the community," said the 25-year residents of Las Vegas. The Society is gaining recognition and support from local businesses. With the efforts of Mayor Oscar Goodman, the Las Vegas City Council, .......... the society is planning a 40-acre miniature railroad park and museum in the northwest part of the valley.
KGA Architecture provided preliminary site plans and cost estimates for the project.......The park promises as much as five miles of track with trains chugging by water features, through tunnels, over bridges with wildlife, plenty of shade trees, miniature villages and a Victorian railroad station. Interested sponsors or volunteers can call Trudy Platzer (702) 656-9705.

VIEW NEIGHBORHOOD NEWSPAPER
By Jan Hogan - View Reporter
JANUARY 29, 2003
The paper writes.....
Train Museum on Track
The Las Vegas Railroad Society plans to build a 40-acre park that will offer rides and educational programs for children. Las Vegas Railroad Society's Bruno Platzer built his Union Pacific Challenger No. 3977 to 1.5" scale. It took 2 years of full time and two years of part time work to complete it. Built-to-scale trains like his will be zipping around nearly five miles of track in a planned railroad park. Bruno Platzer has been a railroad enthusiast since he was a boy in Vienna Austria. He and his wife Trudy are members of the International Brotherhood of Live Steamers and established the Las Vegas Railroad Society in 1999. The group plans to build a 40-acre park that will offer train rides, a museum and educational programs for children.
In a few years, Las Vegas will become home to one of the most elaborate railroad parks in the country. The 40- acre park will feature rides on made-to-scale trains that travel through tunnels, over bridges, around artificial mountains and past miniature towns.
The steam-powered locomotive will periodically stop at the working water tower to refill its tank and there will be a roundhouse where trains are turned. Besides the chance to ride on a miniature train, the park will be home to a 10,000 square-foot iron horse museum with classrooms, a 6,000 square-foot administrative building, a gift shop and a paint and wood-working shop. The administration building will include meeting/banquet rooms and there will be a tea room on property to do double-duty for children's birthday parties..........
The buildings will be Victorian style and old-fashioned lanterns will extend that look. But the undeniable pull of seeing and riding on trains is key. "Ask the kids what's magical about trains," said Trudy Platzer, one of the organizers. "It's because of the fairy tales, the cartoons, and the train around the Christmas tree. We step in and convert that interest to show there's history behind it. We're an educational facility wrapped in fun, fun, fun."
The exact location of the park is secret right now, but it will be in the northwest part of town. The trains will run on nearly five miles of track, go through 11 tunnels and over as many as 50 bridges, taking 15-50 children at a time. Adults will be welcome as well and there will be handicap-accessible trains.
One of the more interesting characteristics of the park will be its educational arm for children. School field trips will be numerous and organizations like Boy-Scouts, YMCA and youth drug-rehabilitation centers will be invited to learn about the inner workings of trains, their historical significance and view the on-site workshop. The main focus of the park will be on the children, especially on those who are handicapped, abandoned and those from needy families.
The park is the brainchild of the Las Vegas Railroad Society, a local nonprofit organization. Thou the group formed in 1999, the idea for the park has been brewing for about 10 years.
Bruno Platzer and his wife, Trudy, founders of the Society, are longtime railroad enthusiasts and members of the International Brotherhood of Live Steamers. They travel all over the country to other railroad parks........ The couple said they see the Las Vegas railroad park playing host to numerous clubs from all over when hobbyists gather for their annual main event. They also see it as another Las Vegas attraction, one steeped in wholesome family fun.
The park is in its infancy stage, just starting to come together. Building one train takes a year and each train depending on the engine type, can cost up to $100,000. The group expects to have four trains, each one patterned after authentic trains with historical significance. Museum displays will use pieces from society hobbyist's private collection.
The park will not be a reality without funds, and the Platzers are approaching corporations for sponsorship..........
By the time the park is complete it's expected to cost between $10 million and $13 million..........
The park will be open seven days a week and, once complete, generate enough income that it won't completely rely on sponsorship to operate......
"It's part of history we refuse to allow to go to sleep." Trudy Platzer said.

Rough Road Before Seeing the Light at the End of the Tunnel:
Las Vegas RR Society in the News Again, Twice.....
LVRRS Comment on Press Release Below: Since 2003/4, the Las Vegas City Council and City Planning have been working on incorporating the Las Vegas Railroad Society Park into the surrounding Floyd Lamb Park areas. The Las Vegas Railroad Society was extremely grateful for the opportunity and was introduced by the city government during neighborhood meetings 2004 and then again in 2006.
This has been a 4 year wait to be included into the Floyd Lamb Park area in ward # 6, not inside the old park but properties adjacent to it. Over the years, the Society had to deal with 2 Councilman on that location, and the situation looked quite promising with successful NW Open Space Plan and participations in neighborhood meetings.
Yet, when the 3rd Councilman entered the picture, which was Councilman Steve Ross, and our local children's destiny was in his hands the entire year of 2006, everything began to fall apart. The below newspaper articles and the 'About Us' page provide you with a story about his ward, and how it all turned out.....
